Introduction
Mountain States Mycology (mSm) is a service
designed to support the Rocky Mountain States (& Provinces). The Mountain
States have some things common among them. Most, in spite of their large
area, have only one mushroom organization for the entire state. Some have
no club at all. Most members of these state clubs live in or near the
state's primary metropolitan area, which hosts the state club. Each of
these states also has a lot of folks who live in smaller towns and rural
areas, individuals who would like to meet with others who share an
interest in mycology, but don't want to travel "half way across the state"
to do so. It is these people that
mSm
hopes
to support.
Goals
My hope is that by providing this service,
isolated mushroomers might find opportunity to join with others close to home
who could hunt, talk, and learn mushrooms together. It's like a dating service
for lonely mushroomers, except all I do is maintain a name list; contact is up
to the individual subscriber.
I suggest that people investigate and, if practical, join their state clubs. I also encourage folks to consider the merits
of membership in the North American
Mycological Association (NAMA).
I mean for mSm to be and
remain a simple, paperless, electronic service. It will use Email and
minimal Webpages to provide information. It is, and will remain, free.
There is no membership fee. There will be no requests for donations nor
will I accept such. There also will be no advertizing, although I may
choose to suggest the use of certain products or services.
To Subscribe
I will regularly update a simple list of names
which includes each subscriber's Name, Town, State and Email
address. (I prefer not to include street addresses or phone numbers;
those can be obtained later through individual communication if desired.)
To add your name to the list, just send me this information and say you
want it added to the list. If later you want it removed or changed, just
let me know.
Note: The subscriber list will specify that members belong to
mSm and the Four
Corners Mushroom Club. If you would like to initiate a new club (for
example: the Green River Puffball Society), just include that information
in your Email message.
Who May Subscribe
The initial impetus to establish this club came from the Four Corners area (AZ,UT,CO,NM).
However, It was apparent that the need for such and organization extends
well beyond the borders of these four states. For example, neither
Wyoming nor Nevada has a mycological club of which I'm aware, so I would
also encourage folks in those states to consider membership. And if anyone
in Idaho & Montana feels this would benefit them, they are welcome to join
as well. I had not intended this service to extend above the Border, but
when requested, I was pleased to offer help to some folks from British
Columbia, who ultimately formed a new club: the Southern Interior Mycological Society.
Expectations:
I do not intend for mSm to take the place
of any established state mycology club, nor will it ever match the scope
of NAMA. I mean
it to
augment and
support the functions of both. I again encourage every interested
mushroomer to consider the benefits of membership in a more traditional
mycological organization.
The success of this project will depend on individual effort and
individual responsibility. I'll maintain the name list; the rest is up to you.
If you have suggestions for improving the site, I'll listen. If you want to
organize an activity and post a notice here, we'll talk. And if you want to
initiate a new club, this just might be the place to begin.
Cautionary Note & Disclaimer:
Because it is on the Web, this list will be publicly available, so those
adding their names should consider this first. I will not distribute the
list or any information contained theron to any interest, commercial or
otherwise. I expressly prohibit use of the list beyond the purposes of
this service.
