On Friday, August 2nd, NMMS member Barbara Marigold is opening a new show at her Santa Fe
gallery. Marigold Arts, located at 424 Canyon Road, features
Barbara's work as well as that of other talented artists. Visitors can enjoy the show "Native
Influences" from August 2-28.
As part of the opening reception, Pen La Farge will read from his new book
Turn Left at the Sleeping
Dog, "a light and diverse collection of oral histories." (Albuq. Journal, 28jul02, p.F7).
One of the characters featured in 'Sleeping Dog' is Chuck
Barrows, patron saint of New Mexico mushroomers
August Meeting - Aug 6
The next NMMS meeting will be at 7:30 pm, Tuesday,
August 6th, in the Multi-Purpose Room of the NM Museum of Natural History.
Since this will be the pre-Foray meeting, program(s) and discussions
will address that topic. Pat Brannen will present general Foray
information, and John Rahart will discuss Collecting Ethics.
Thanks to our finally receiving some rain, we anticipate a good fruiting for our annual Foray
at Sipapu Ski Area (on Hwy 518 south of Taos and northwest of Las Vegas and Mora.) The dates are August
22-25. This is a wonderful area with close access to portions of both the Santa Fe and Carson
National Forests, both of which have re-opened after their closure due to fire danger.
The deadline to register and pay for the Foray is August 8th. We must
submit a count to Sipapu by this date so that they will know how much
food to get for us. Those registering after Aug 8th will have to
provide their own meals.
We have passed the release date (June 22) for reserving rooms at Sipapu Lodge.
It is now almost filled up (all motel rooms, suites and bunk rooms are
taken; only dormitory rooms are left--I'm not sure about camping spots). However, there are cabins
available for rent
in Tres Ritos (3 miles down the road from Sipapu). Room prices range from
$45 - $115. If you still need accommodations and aren't satisfied with what's left at Sipapu, call
the folks in Tres Ritos at (505)587-0486.
After leaving the Foray site on Sunday (25aug02),
NMMS Foray participants are invited to head to Taos for the
traditional Foray Dinner at Villa
Fontana, which is just north of Taos on Hwy 522 (less than an hour's
drive from the Foray
site).
Arrive at 2pm for wine and social. Dinner begins at 2:30.
Cost will be $45 per person, which includes tax & gratuity.
If you plan to attend, please send your check, payable to Villa Fontana, to
Pat Brannen (332 Tulane NE, ABQ 87106)
no later that August 20th. If you have questions, Pat's phone# is (505)255-5816.
Maggie Rogers forwarded a message from Don Coombs stating that Mushroom the Journal is no
longer paying its own way and that
they may cease publication. Read the letter at
