NAMA Exotic Foray in Alaska
9-11 August, 2002
  • Place:  Kenai Peninsula, AK
  • Dates:  9-11 August, 2002
  • Our foray starts Thursday afternoon and lasts into Sunday, Aug. 11; you may extend the stay if you wish. Boyd Shaffer, a botanist at U. AK on the Kenai Peninsula, has volunteered to be our local authority on mushrooms and to take us on forays.

We will be staying at the Alaska Sports Lodge, located in Sterling, a small town near Soldatna on the western coast of the Kenai Peninsula. From Anchorage, the lodge is a 2.5-3 hour drive through spectacular scenery.

The Lodge can sleep 6 in a cabin: 2 in a bedroom, 4 in a loft. In the main house are 2 double rooms with private baths for 4 more guests. We will cook in the cabin kitchen or go to one of the 8-9 restaurants in nearby Soldatna. Freezer space is available to us in the main house. There is room for a few smallish campers, but no power for them is available. The charge for bringing a camper will be $20 for the 3-day foray.

Next door to the Lodge is another fishing camp: this neighbor will arrange fishing trips for silver salmon for those who are interested and handle any overflow foray guests. Setup and costs are similar to those at Alaska Sports Lodge.

    COSTS:

  • attendees arrange their own transportation
  • attendees arrange their own meals
  • cost: less than $155
  • to reserve space, NAMA members should send a check for $25 per person made out to "NAMA AK 2002" to Phyllis Cole, 54 Cumbre Lane, Scotts Valley, CA 95066-3306.

  • NOTE: this event is for NAMA members only; to join NAMA, include a $35 check made out to "NAMA" with your reservation check.
