We started examining a short stretch of the Crest Trail, then moved back down the Crest road, ending
up at 9 Mile picnic area.
Our visit produced a few interesting specimens. Perhaps the most
exciting, however, were not a fungus, but small orchids which we found in some abundance.
There is a $3 daily parking fee in the Sandias. Those who think they will
be frequenting the Sandias might consider purchasing an annual pass for $30
(good for 2 vehicles). You can get a permit at the main Cibola NF office:
