NMMS Field Trip Report - 8 Aug 2001
Date: Wednesday, 8 August 2001 Location: Bandelier Burn
Study Plots & Pajarito Ski Area
10:00 - Parking area across Hwy 4 from Burn Study Plot Conditions:
Moist Species (or Genera) Found:
Burn Study plots: Still lots of Geopyxis, a half dozen
species of LBM's (haven't ID'd them yet). A couple of Boletus
barrowsii.
Pajarito Ski Area: too many to mention
Participant:
David
Wallis
Notes:
The severe burn area showed no fungal growth. The mild burn areas
were so thick with grasses that fungal fruitings on the ground would
have been difficult to spot. The moderate burn area evidenced the most
noticeable fungal growth.
An interesting habitat (not part of our survey area) was in the
parking area across the road. There is abundant straw remaining in the
area from the post-burn erosion control efforts. The straw is now home
to some very health and colorful specimens. Perhaps the most impressive
was a prime Pluteus cervinus: 13cm both in cap diameter and stalk
length.
In preparation for Sunday's Mushroom
Hike, I also visited a mile or so of the Quemazon Trail, which heads
out of the Pajarito Ski Area parking lot. There were dozens of species
of mushrooms fruiting in abundance. Once again, I strongly encourage
NMMS members to participate on this hike. I think you will be in
for some pleasant surprises.
