Field Trip Report
East side of Sandias

Saturday, 17 April 2010

Details:
  • Field Trip began at 09:00
  • We began at the parking lot at Doc Long's and walked up the Bill Spring Trail, visiting an elevation range of 7300-7800 ft.
  • Directions:

  • From the intersection of NM Hwys 14 & 536 at San Antonito, head west on the Sandia Crest Rd (536). The Doc Long parking lot is approximately 2 miles from the intersection.

  • Maps:
  • Sandias (Doc Long's is designated MH3440.)
  • Getting there from Abq or SF
    Conditions:
  • Stream was running energetically along Bill Spring Trail. There was still a bit of residual snow in shaded areas. We walked through running water and mud. Trail was clear of snowbanks.
  • Rain on Friday and early Saturday morning had left the area nice and moist. Precipitation had ceased by the time we arrived at Doc Long's. The temprature was probably in high 40's througout the hike.

    Fungi:

  • The scouting trip on Thursday revealed one Discina and lots of desiccated Auricularia.
  • The field trip itself produced abundant Auricularia (wood ears), a fair amount of Tremella mesenterica or Witches' Butter (an orange jelly fungus). Linda found the only agarics, some LBMs, fruiting in some leaf litter. We also found a few small Peziza specimens, and Terri discovered a nice Myxomycete (slime mold).
