Subject: Los Alamos Fungus Study
A few members of the New Mexico Mycological Society are considering a
program to study the reemergence of fungi in some of the Los Alamos burn
areas. Preliminary plans call for six plots to be surveyed every two weeks
or so when there is sufficient moisture. These plots will be some of the
same ones, or close to the same, as those surveyed in the past by Nelson
Jarmie and Fran Rogers. The publication
LA-13384-MS (available on the Web) details the results of this study.
Survey details are also in the Los Alamos report, "Distribution and
Diversity of Fungal Species in and Adjacent to the Los Alamos National
Laboratory" by Randy Balice, Nelson Jarmie, and Fran Rogers.
The plots are of such a size that a single plot survey should take about
an hour, exclusive of identifying the finds. Bill Jarmie suggests that
identification to genus may be sufficient if the species identification is
too difficult.
This should be an interesting and fun program, although it will take
willingness by the participants to give up some of their free time. We
would like to discuss this program at the NMMS meeting Tuesday evening.
If you have an interest in taking part in this program, we urge you to
attend the meeting.
